This pale yellow diamond weighing in at 123 carat was found by a local during the early days of the South African diamond rush. In 1858 it was purchased by Captain E.S. Hanger for the Bloemfontein Rangers, who fought in the Basuto War. Captain Hanger send the stone to Amsterdam to be cut into a brilliant rose shape. The Countess of Charlemont from Country Tyrone, Ireland paid a visit to Amsterdam in 1870 and bought the diamond for £300. The Countess deposited the diamond in the bank as security with the hope that the gem she could not afford to have set, might become valuable.
That’s where the story ends.
The picture shows Kimberley before the diamond digging began.
